Base Housing Carpet Sampler™
Seventeen tasteful beiges.
The Base Housing Carpet Sampler™ is a curated collection of seventeen individual carpet swatches representing the full chromatic range available to Air Force base housing residents at most installations: taupe (samples 1–3), cream (4–5), oatmeal (6–8), sand (9–11), fawn (12–14), linen (15), warm gray (16), and a sample simply labeled 'Off-White, Standard Issue' (17). Each swatch is 4×4 inches, backed with felt, and numbered for reference in the included comparison guide.
The comparison guide is a laminated single-page document that helps residents differentiate between samples that, to the untrained eye, appear identical. The guide notes that samples 7 and 8 — Oatmeal Classic and Oatmeal Warm — differ by approximately 2% in yellow-brown value and that this distinction 'matters significantly when evaluating against wall paint.' We agree. We have been in base housing. We know how seriously people take this.
Navy sailors live below the waterline on metal decks and call it home, and they do not need a carpet sampler because there is no carpet, and we respect that in the way you respect a life choice that is extremely different from your own.
“The Navy lives below the waterline on steel decks — they don't need carpet swatches because they don't have carpet, and somehow that's worse.”

After-Action Reports
Spent two weeks comparing samples 6, 7, and 8. Chose 7. Oatmeal Warm. It is correct. The guide was essential. My spouse asked where I got these and I said 'a place that understands us.'
I am a new officer and I do not yet live in base housing. I bought this to feel prepared. The swatches are real and the guide is good. I now have opinions about oatmeal as a color category.
Gifted this to every O-5 in my group upon selection for base housing. One of them cried at the laminated guide. The right amount of ceremony for the occasion. Five stars.
