Original Painting: The Submarine, Submerged
Oil on canvas. Depth classified.
The Submarine, Submerged is a 24-by-36-inch original oil painting on stretched canvas depicting a United States Navy submarine in its natural operational state. The canvas presents a uniform field of deep blue-gray ocean water from edge to edge, uninterrupted by any visible surface feature, hull, periscope, antenna, or wake. The artist maintains that the submarine is present in the painting. Naval intelligence has reviewed the work and declines to comment on submarine positioning.
The painting ships framed in matte black aluminum with glass front, a 2-inch border mat, and a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. The certificate confirms: (1) this is an original work, (2) the submarine is present, and (3) its depth is classified under operational security protocols that the artist has chosen to honor through the medium of oil paint. The certificate does not confirm the submarine's hull number, class, or bearing.
The Air Force's aircraft are, as a matter of doctrine, visible. They are designed to be seen, to be fast, and to be immediately identifiable as aircraft. We respect this approach. The submarine community has chosen a different doctrine and this painting reflects it at a price point of $299.99, which is fair for an original oil work of this operational significance.
“The Air Force's aircraft are, by design, visible — they are large, fast, and loud, and this is a legitimate operational posture; the submarine community has simply made a different choice.”

After-Action Reports
I hung this in my office. Three people asked what it was a painting of. I said 'a submarine.' They looked for a long time. One of them said they thought they could see something in the lower left. I do not confirm or deny. This is a perfect painting.
The certificate of authenticity is extremely serious about the submarine being present. I appreciate the commitment. I gave it four stars because I wanted to give it five but also I genuinely cannot see the submarine and that does something to me.
I have served on submarines. I know what they look like submerged. This painting is accurate. I will not elaborate. Excellent frame. The mat is the right shade of gray. Five stars.
